SDI Converter

The Best SDI Converters (2023 Update)

This is a complete list of SDI converters I use and trust.

In this list you'll find:

Let's get started...

HDMI Signal Converters

Converters in this category will convert HDMI to SDI or SDI to HDMI.

They only do signal conversions and do not change characteristics of the video signal like resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, or color space.

They work best when your source signal is already SMPTE-compliant and you do not need to change any part of the signal before output.

They will also interface with digital DVI components with a proper DVI male to HDMI female adapter or DVI female to HDMI male adapter.

IMPORTANT: I always recommend scaler converters when converting HDMI signals from computers and consumer devices to SDI.

I only recommend products I use and trust. When you buy through links here, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Why You Can Trust Me

Blackmagic Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 12G

Best Overall HDMI/SDI Converter

Blackmagic Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 12G

Get Price at Amazon

This box will cover just about every HDMI/SDI signal conversion, and do so at a reasonable price.

Notable highlights include...

  • Convert in both directions simultaneously, even in different input formats
  • Get camera and lens control, preview and program tally, and camera record start/stop capability when put between compatible Blackmagic switchers and Blackmagic cameras
  • Apply a 3D LUT to one or both outputs for creative control of final look

Works Best For

  • SDI to HDMI conversions for non-critical displays
  • Interfacing Blackmagic cameras with Blackmagic ATEM switchers
  • LUT box functionality for inline color transforms or color grading

Pros

  • Price
  • LUT functionality
  • Blackmagic camera control
  • Power from a variety of AC and DC power sources over USB

Cons

  • Included power supplies have a notable failure rate
  • USB power ports can be insecure

IMPORTANT: I want to be clear that I do not consider the unidirectional Blackmagic Micro Converters to be equal with the bidirectional Blackmagic Micro Converters. The bidirectional models tend to be much more reliable, more than likely due to the fact that they are engineered to handle twice the throughput and heat compared to the unidirectional models. Therefore, the bidirectional Micro Converters are the bare minimum I recommend.

No frills or fancy features here. Just rock-solid performance from a trusted brand.

If both inputs are active, it will do simultaneous conversion in both directions.

If only one input is active, it will send signal from the active input to both outputs.

Decimator converters are always top quality and reasonably priced, which is why it can often be difficult to find them in stock.

Works Best For

  • SDI to HDMI conversions for displays
  • HDMI to SDI conversions for sources that are already SMPTE-compliant

Pros

  • Price
  • Reliability
  • Power from a variety of AC and DC power sources over USB

Cons

  • Decimator Design's current status (see below)
  • USB power ports can be insecure

IMPORTANT: Decimator Design is unfortunately showing less signs of life day by day. While they are still shipping products, albeit sporadically and unpredictably, there have been no new products or website updates since April 2020 and they haven't been appearing at recent major trade shows. All of that to say: If you can find this converter in stock and priced at or below $99 MSRP, then don't hesitate to get it. But I don't recommend paying more than MSRP or making plans around any promised back-order fulfillment dates, because there are plenty of other great options out there.

If you don't need 4K capability or the LUT feature found in the top pick above, this lower priced model is a great solution.

You still get simultaneous conversion in both directions, even in different formats, as well as the same Blackmagic camera control and tally capabilities found in the 12G model.

And the price can't be beat.

Works Best For

  • SDI to HDMI conversions for non-critical displays
  • Interfacing Blackmagic cameras with Blackmagic ATEM switchers

Pros

  • Price
  • Blackmagic camera control
  • Power from a variety of AC and DC power sources over USB

Cons

  • No LUT functionality like in the 12G model
  • Included power supplies have a notable failure rate
  • USB power ports can be insecure

IMPORTANT: I want to be clear that I do not consider the unidirectional Blackmagic Micro Converters to be equal with the bidirectional Blackmagic Micro Converters. The bidirectional models tend to be much more reliable, more than likely due to the fact that they are engineered to handle twice the throughput and heat compared to the unidirectional models. Therefore, the bidirectional Micro Converters are the bare minimum I recommend.

AVMATRIX SC1221 & SC1112

Great Value HDMI/SDI Converters

AVMATRIX SC1221 & SC1112

Get Price at Amazon

AVMATRIX is somewhat new to the market, so their track record in terms of quality and reliability is yet to be seen.

However, I do like the way these boxes are made and I have seen good results with them so far.

There really is nothing special here, though. Just a nicely built converter at a decent price.

However, the included detachable mounting bracket is a nice touch.

Available in both HDMI to 3G-SDI (SC1221) and 3G-SDI to HDMI (SC1112) models.

Works Best For

  • SDI to HDMI conversions for non-critical displays
  • HDMI to SDI conversions for sources that are already SMPTE-compliant
  • Battery powered situations

Pros

  • Price
  • Impressive build quality
  • Power draw of 2 watts or less

HDMI Scaler Converters

Converters in this category not only convert HDMI to SDI and SDI to HDMI, they also provide additional processing between the input(s) and output(s) that can do some, or all, of these actions:

  • Convert one standard to another (e.g. 720p59.94 input to 1080p59.94 output)
  • Convert the frame rate (e.g. 60 fps input to 29.97 fps output)
  • Scale the image (e.g. 1920 x 1080 input to 1280 x 720 output)
  • Scale and crop, letterbox, or pillarbox the video (e.g. 1920 x 1080 scaled and letterboxed in a 720 x 480 output)
  • Convert the color encoding/space (e.g. RGB input to YCbCr output)
  • Flip and/or rotate the video
  • Frame synchronization (e.g. re-time input frames to sync with a genlocked system)

These converters are also commonly referred to as cross converters, down/up/cross (DUC) converters, up/down/cross (UDC) converters, standards converters, or scan converters.

They will also interface with digital DVI components with a proper DVI male to HDMI female adapter or DVI female to HDMI male adapter.

If your source signal is not already SMPTE-compliant, or you need to change things like resolution or frame rate, then these converters are what you need.

IMPORTANT: I always recommend these converters when converting HDMI signals from computers and consumer devices to SDI. This ensures the input signal is properly converted to full SMPTE specifications before being passed to the output.

Decimator 12G-Cross

Best Overall HDMI/SDI Scaler Converter

Decimator 12G-Cross

Get Price at Amazon

When this was released in 2019 I was 🤯.

12G-SDI, robust scaling, and the same dependability Decimator is known for, all for less than $500 USD. That was simply unimaginable at the time and, even still, is pretty much impossible to beat.

If you need, or ever plan on needing, 4K or UHD capability then this is a no-brainer. Just get it! (If you can find it)

Works Best For

  • Almost every HDMI/SDI conversion

Pros

  • 4 x 12G-SDI outputs
  • Scale and convert any SMPTE format and 294 different VESA formats
  • Lock reference to any input, including external genlock
  • Vertical and horizontal image flipping
  • Metal locking DC power input

Cons

  • Finding one in stock 😭
  • Decimator Design's current status (see below)

IMPORTANT: Decimator Design is unfortunately showing less signs of life day by day. While they are still shipping products, albeit sporadically and unpredictably, there have been no new products or website updates since April 2020 and they haven't been appearing at recent major trade shows. All of that to say: If you can find this converter in stock and priced at or below $495 USD MSRP, then don't hesitate to get it. If you can't find it, then don't be surprised if you have to wait many months for it to arrive. And I would venture to guess there is a slight possibility it may never arrive at all. Although I really do hope that guess is wrong.

This old-timer celebrates its 10th birthday this year! 🎉

While it does sort of look like it came out of the trunk of your uncle's '92 Camaro Z28, it doesn't really matter because it still brings the goods (just like that old Z28).

Scale any input up to 1920 x 1080 at 60 fps including 8 of the most popular VGA formats, adjust image settings like brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation with the built-in proc amp, embed two channels of analog audio, and configure settings with DIP switches or over a USB connection.

After seeing a lot of these in action, in all kinds of production environments over the last decade, I can't think of one that I've seen fail. They're workhorses, through and through.

Works Best For

  • Converting VGA or HDMI computer signals to SDI
  • Embedding analog RCA audio into HDMI or SDI

Pros

  • Reliability
  • Adjust important settings using onboard DIP switches
  • Proc amp adjustment of brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation.
  • Locking metal power input

Cons

  • DAC Center software is Windows only

SMPTE ST 2110 Converters

SMPTE's ST 2110 is a growing suite of standards for the transport, synchronization, and structure of video, audio, and ancillary data over managed IP networks.

Because ST 2110 is defined and published by SMPTE, the leading authority for broadcast standards, it has become the de facto standard for AV over IP in broadcast production.

While the ST 2110 specifications have been around for more than 6 years now, it has only just begun to take off in adoption and integration. So while there might be few options here right now (and most being quite expensive), expect this category to grow rapidly and prices to come down as more products are released.

The future of broadcast and IP is finally looking interesting!

Blackmagic 2110 IP Converter 3x3G

While this converter is not available yet, I can pretty much guarantee it's going to sell like hotcakes.

Why?

Let me count the ways...

  • 3 channels of uncompressed bidirectional 3G-SDI conversion
  • Reference output tied to ST 2110 PTP clock
  • Supports SMPTE-2110-21 traffic shaping/timing
  • Supports SMPTE-2110-30 audio
  • Supports SMPTE-2110-40 ancillary data
  • Supports multicast
  • Supports NMOS interface specifications
  • Redundant power from AC and PoE+

Typically, products with this capability and price point come along well after a technology or standard has matured. So the fact this is already here at this price is simply bonkers!

Pros

  • Price
  • Simultaneous bidirectional capability
  • 3 channels of conversion in one unit
  • Redundant power options

Cons

  • Too new to know reliability
  • ST 2110 and uncompressed IP workflows are new and have little support and market adoption

NDI Converters

NDI is a royalty-free protocol released in 2015 that enables devices to send and receive compressed video, audio, and ancillary data over a LAN. It gained in popularity as one of the first reliable AV over IP solutions because of its royalty-free licensing model and compressed format, allowing it to run over simpler and low-cost networking infrastructure.

IMPORTANT: Because of inherent and often unpredictable latency, I only recommend using NDI as a deliverable solution to non-essential destinations like digital signage and classrooms. I do not recommend using NDI for any live multi-cam system where low latency or matching sources is required. This applies especially to situations that require IMAG.

Kiloview N50

Best Overall NDI/SDI Converter

Kiloview N50

Get Price at B&H

Kiloview has been creating IP encoders and decoders for over a decade, but only recently has gone all out with their NDI product line. And these new N series encoders/decoders are quite exceptional!

This little box is flat out the most powerful encoder/decoder available right now, and it still manages to beat all competition on price. 🫨

It offers 12G-SDI input and output, full-bandwidth NDI in 4:2:2 10-bit and 8-bit formats, NDI|HX 2 and 3 in H.264 and HEVC formats, a built-in LCD screen and scroll wheel for easy configuration, a USB port that supports PTZ control and Kiloview's intercom (KIS), 2 Ethernet ports for network redundancy, recording directly to microSD cards, and DC or PoE power options.

I recommend Kiloview be your first look when implementing NDI. They are one of the few that fully get it.

Pros

  • 12G-SDI capability
  • Full 10-bit 4:2:2 NDI capability
  • Ethernet redundancy
  • Full features available immediately

Cons

  • Encoding and decoding not available simultaneously
  • DC power input doesn't lock

Another great Kiloview N series encoder/decoder with 3G-SDI and NDI full-bandwidth support.

This, in my opinion, is exactly what an entry level NDI converter should be.

It supports full-bandwidth NDI in 4:2:2 8-bit, NDI|HX 2 and 3, up to 4 channels of embedded audio, embedding or de-embedding of two channels of analog audio, seamless switching output of up to nine NDI sources, DC or PoE power options, includes a front panel LCD screen and buttons for easy configuration, a bi-color tally indicator, and a USB port that supports PTZ control as well as Kiloview's intercom (KIS).

It checks all the boxes while keeping the cost as low as possible.

Pros

  • Price
  • Encode or decode from the same unit
  • Seamless SDI switching between NDI sources

Cons

  • Encoding and decoding not available simultaneously

VGA Converters

Converters in this category will convert VGA to SDI or SDI to VGA.

They will also interface with analog DVI components with a proper DVI male to VGA female adapter or DVI female to VGA male adapter.

IMPORTANT: I always recommend using a scaler converter when converting VGA to SDI.

And it is just about the best bang for the buck around when it comes to a proper, and decently scaled, VGA to SDI conversion.

Works Best For

  • Converting VGA or HDMI computer signals to SDI
  • Embedding analog RCA audio into HDMI or SDI

Pros

  • Reliability
  • Adjust important settings using onboard DIP switches
  • Proc amp adjustment of brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation.
  • Locking metal power input

Cons

  • DAC Center software is Windows only
  • Port and switch layout is a bit crowded
  • While the power switch is handy for some situations, it can also be a frustration for others

This is an excellent bang for the buck that will work for a majority of VGA to SDI conversions.

It offers easy DIP switch adjustments, 16 different SMPTE output formats, a 3.5mm stereo audio input for embedding 2 channels of analog audio, and letterboxing and pillarboxing options.

And, after being around a few years now, these boxes have proven to be quite reliable and durable.

All in all, this is an excellent budget-friendly VGA scaler.

I love that this unit offers 4K UHD capability.

But...

I do not love that this unit only offers 4K UHD capability through HDMI.

However, because VGA cannot get anywhere near 4K or UHD resolutions, there aren't many options when you need to interface VGA with formats greater than 1080p.

For the few times you do need that done, though, this converter can make it happen.

I also appreciate the reference input, giving you the ability to incorporate VGA into genlocked systems.

Delay Converters

Converters in this category will delay all, or part, of the input signal before passing it on to output(s).

IMPORTANT: Approach this category with caution. I do not recommend delaying live video in a vast majority of situations. If you are having problems with audio falling behind video, then I suggest troubleshooting your signal flow and system before adding delay as a band-aid to a bigger foundational issue. This is especially true when using software DAWs for mixing live audio.

This is just about the cheapest way to reliably delay all, or part, of input sources.

Just be aware that it can only do a maximum delay of 4.5 frames (9 fields), which isn't much.

However, it offers stero audio embedding as well as independent control for video and audio delay, making it useful for re-syncing separate audio and video feeds.

If you only need up 4.5 frames of delay, this will definitely get the job done and probably save you money compared to alternatives.

HDCP Converters

Converters in this category convert HDMI to SDI and provide reliable ways to pass HDCP-encrypted content.

HDCP is a digital copy protection found in HDMI devices that prevents the copying of digital video and audio content as it passes through the signal chain.

One common complaint with HDMI to SDI conversion is the inability to play HDCP-encrypted content even when all the proper licensing and permissions are acquired.

But, contrary to popular belief, there are ways to send that content over SDI without risky hacks or workarounds!
